Thomas Allmendinger is a retired chemist, educated in Zurich and living near Zurich (Switzerland), thus in a city where several eminent quantum chemists had been active, for instance Erwin Schrödinger, Walter Heitler, Wolfgang Pauli, and not least Albert Einstein. In Allmendinger’s course of studies at the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) quantum physics was part of the subjects taught, too. Indeed, at the diploma examination Schrödinger’s equation came up for discussion. But the fact that it could not really be understood left behind an overall impression of incompleteness, although it represents the foundation of physics which is not only relevant for specialists. Certainly, this was not relevant for his further professional career as a researcher in a private lab, as a high-school teacher, lab-head in accumulators industry, and in particular as head of a project at the ETH and the PSI (Paul Scherrer Institute) concerning electrochemical fuel cells, whereby a doctorate was gained. Subsequently, he was holder of a private R&D lab at the Technopark in Zurich, affiliated to the AFIF (Working Group for Industrial Research), mainly working on alternative energies and recycling projects. Finally, he was employed as lab-head in a notable company operating in the field of electroplating. Already during that job, but in particular after retirement and during the subsequent occupation as a private scientist, the quantum question continued to be a major issue, leading to the now presented result. A new interpretation for Quantum Mechanics, which is based on the sampling theory, is presented. In the new interpretation, a particle is treated as a 3-D continuous signal in the coordinate space. Because of the limited resolution in the reciprocal space, which is known as the frequency space, its spectrum can only be represented by a discrete signal which is a sampled version of the continuous spectral signal. From the sampling theory, the particle will have infinite number of image replicas in the coordinate space. It is these image replicas that form the particle’s wavefunction. Based on the new interpretation, a photon is a local Electro-Magnetic (EM) excitation pulse, the photon wavefunction is a non-local monochrome pseudo EM wave which is formed by the photon’s excitation signal and its image replicas. An electron is its EM field, the electron wavefunction is a non-local polychrome pseudo EM wave which is formed by the electron’s EM field and its image replicas. The properties of the electron wavefunction are calculated. These properties are used in a proposed experiment which can distinguish the new interpretation from the existing probability interpretation. Based on the new interpretation, it is demonstrated that the quantum effect is a relativistic effect. Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity are compatible and expose two different aspects of space time. Both Quantum Coherence and Quantum Collapse are naturally explained based on the new interpretation.
